I like the moment the imagination meets the senses, where mind and matter coalesce. I have an interest in dreams, alchemy, synchronicity, poetry and extra-sensory perception. I explore themes which allow me to use symbols, metaphors and objects which hold the senses with a reverence such as perfume, vinyl records, tactile toys, certain foods, talismans, packaging. I am often chasing down a feeling of the precious and sacred, where something of the imaginary is crystallized.

Painting in abstract gives me the freedom to collect together colours, forms, textures and imagery that I love without boundary.

I work on wooden panels mostly and in acrylic paint, layering colours and shapes in a playful manner and with little intention other than a vague theme.

It is a sensual process combining thick opaque areas of colour, glazes that build up a patina, dreamy diffuse and transparent paint and drips. I want to create a sense of decadence in antidote to the ordinary and to hint at ethereal, mysterious experience. I am drawn to creamy, soft neutrals, rich complex darks and sugary fluorescence. I want to combine the sensual and earthy with the fantastical and artifice.

As I build up layers, collecting things I love, something will emerge that will inform the personality of the painting and I will work with more intention and sensitivity. Towards the end often I experience a kind of synaesthesia where I experience the painting with all my senses.
