In this series I worked in black and white so that I could push composition, texture, visual language and painting in a freer style, without the seductions of colour.

I learnt the beauty of grey in its various warm and cool tones, patterns, contrasts, soft veils of white and the chalky opaque. Most of all, I was able to paint with energy, intuition and allowing for a rawness.

Lemurian Codes was painted in an intuitive way. I made marks with little intention or thought until a chalky veil emerged that reminded me of the crystal quartz described as ‘Lemurian’. This type of quartz has a ‘barcode’ series of marks on its surface and is said to be encoded messages from a civilization associated with Atlantis.
