Junk

Junk
“Junk” employs a harmonious blend of warm and cool tones derived from the Zorn palette, traditionally consisting of only four colours: white, black, yellow ochre, and vermilion (here substituted with cadmium red).
A limited colour range brings emphasis to the textures and forms of the food items whilst creating a unified composition. The warm tones might evoke feelings of comfort; soft pinks and purples suggest sugary indulgence; whilst vibrant colours reference the condiments and packaging that are an important part of the aesthetics and ritual of eating takeaway food.
The various food items, including a donut, burger, hotdog, taco, sushi roll, and milkshake reflect the global fusion and convenience of takeaway food.
The title, “Junk”, may be a commentary on the proliferation of fast food in modern culture but it may also play with ideas about what is valuable.
In essence, this painting is a celebration of idiosyncrasies in culture through the lense of food presentation.
