This painting is part of a series of paintings exploring the theme of toys, play and the imaginary. The most abstracted painting in this series, the composition is reduced to blocks of purple, magenta, orange, caramel, peach and brown.
The vibrant colours evoke a sense of joy, energy and fantasy. They may also be reminiscent of artificial materials used in toys. Neutral colours reference the organic and tactile, implying the physical body interacting with objects.
Each colour can evoke different feelings or themes, much like how a toy can transform in a child's mind into various characters or scenarios during play. These blocks could represent structures, figurines, cars or puzzles but as very abstracted forms, they retain the kind of malleability that objects have in imaginative play. Areas of texture, opacity and transparency reflect complex layers of reality and fantasy.
Acrylic on cradled, wooden panel.
