In this series I worked in black and white so that I could push composition, texture, visual language and painting in a freer style, without the seductions of colour.

I learnt the beauty of grey in its various warm and cool tones, patterns, contrasts, soft veils of white and the chalky opaque. Most of all, I was able to paint with energy, intuition and allowing for a rawness.

Types of Rain began to take shape when I fell in love with the group of marshmallow like shapes. Something about their plump shape reminded me of the sensation of rain.  Scrawly lines, letters, shapes became more abstractions of the different experiences of rain.
