In this series I worked in black and white so that I could push composition, texture, visual language and painting in a freer style, without the seductions of colour.

I learnt the beauty of grey in its various warm and cool tones, patterns, contrasts, soft veils of white and the chalky opaque. Most of all, I was able to paint with energy, intuition and allowing for a rawness.

I titled this painting Rebel because it seemed so insistent on a particular path to its own resolution or, it seemed so resistant to my attempts to maneuver it any direction. The title also captures something of the visual language- the orbs spiraling and in contrast to the blocky shapes that hint at structures.
