Series - COLOUR THEORY

In this series I used a limited palette of Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow , Titanium White and Mars Black with the goal to learn more about colour. I was surprised by the range of hues available - dusky purples, burnt sienna, rich burgandy, shell pink and subtle neutrals.

Three of the paintings were created with a loose grid structure so that I could play with combinations of colours and values. I immersed myself in the process of colour mixing and learnt so much about the complements.

In vanity case I really enjoyed the luminous pinks and creams against the blackberry. I began to see the shapes as lotions and ran with this, exploring transparent glazes, soft gestural brushmarks and sparkly, powdery patterns. This theme carried over to Vanity Cabinet which has more of vintage packaging feel with bright pops of lemon, golds, baby pink and bronze.

Beer emerged with the gold against the fluffy white and the malted neutrals. I wanted to explore saturated colour against neutrals and make the bright yellow accents really sing.

Copy and Paste Pony and Fluff World were truly experimental. I brushed excess paint from my brushes until the colours, shapes and marks began to look interesting and then I worked with intention to suggest an imaginary experience.
